New Damper Top Collar and framework.

I have designed a new Damper Top Collar with built in framework to prevent over stressing the ceramic when excessive force is used in situations where the Damper Top is “stuck” or “frozen” and will not turn. When proper “maintenance”, such as occasionally turning or movement when necessary, cleaning the threads and “sealing” Damper Tops when Kamados are exposed to the elements, broken dampers will not occur, however they DO occur and have occurred in about 150 cases in over 15,000 Kamados that we have produced. In every case where damper tops (“hat” or other such name) are broken, it is a disaster not to be able to Kook until a new one is received.

Please take a look at the CAD drawing with these points in mind:
• The collar is ¾ or 1 inch by 1/8 inch thick stainless steel depending upon the size of the Kamado and which matches the new stainless steel Collar that is now on all new Kamado lids.
• The framework and collar, as shown in the drawing, are placed in the mold that forms the shape of the Damper.
• A special insulating ceramic formula is placed in the mold forming the ceramic damper top with the new stainless collar outside and the framework cast inside.
• When the ceramic Damper is removed from the mold the Damper will have a stainless collar on the outside with ¾ inch threaded rod (which screws into the ¾ inch nut in the neck of the Kamado lid).
• The exterior shape of the Damper Top will remain the same and in most cases where the Dampers are tiled, the only difference will be the lower row of ceramic tile is replaced by a stainless steel collar.

The Result of this framework and additional expense is to transfer the force of turning the Damper Top, on the heavy stainless steel collar and not as earlier where force is on the one metal rod welded to the ¾ inch threaded rod that extended a few inches into the ceramic damper top casting that forms a “T”. Picture will follow of the older system. Additionally, the stainless steel damper collar protects the most venerable area of the damper’s lower edge from chipping or damage.

Notes and Comments:
• New ceramic casting formula (as the case sine 2008 models) remains.
• New 3/4 inch rod metal alloy (as used since 2008) remains.
• Thread distance (amount of turns per inch) remains the same. A larger thread distance or fewer revolutions required per inch opening, makes “stuck” or “frozen” damper much worse as more force is required for any movement. Similar to starting from stop in high (3rd or 4th gear).
• This new system is not 100% bullet proof but certainly goes a long way toward our goal of making the very best Kamado we can and at the same time make sure we make the “Best BBQ Grill in the World”!

FAQ:
• Is this Damper Top Collar an improvement over pre 2008 Kamados? I would say it is, definitely
• Is this necessary for 2008 and later new Kamados or replacements? No, but it definitely an improvement.
• What are the additional costs? Please email sales@kamado.com
• When will these Damper Top Collars become available? We are making them now but not in full production yet.

Please email me, richardj@kamado.com, with your comments and question. Thanks, Richard

Thought I read somewhere that casting metal into a "ceramic" is a problem on account of differant expansion rates between the two materials. This must be some super "new" ceramic formula.

Note the title on the CAD dwg-- DUMPER TOP COLLAR
The letters A and U are pretty far apart on the keyboard so its doubtful that this is a typo. Are these are intended to be DUMPED into the trash soon after you buy one because RJ will claim-- YOU didn't maintain it properly.

Wonder what S/S bolt is??? Super Shi**y maybe?

And a FAQ section too!! On a brand new part?? Who asked the frequent questions the girls?

He claims again to have made 15,000 Kamados. BS. Only if he includes the terra cotta cookers he imported back in the 60s.
